One time when I was in college, I came across a book in the physics library which told the rather forgotten story of the OTHER physicists in the 1890s who attempted to explain why the speed of light is invariant.
All of them created Rube Goldberg explanations which, if you really REALLY strained things, sort of worked, except, of course, they didn't.
We await our Einstein today, as well.
