My favorite Kubrick movie, in a way, is Barry Lyndon. It's difficult because like most of the films mentioned here, it is so emotionally empty that it's hard to imagine if Mr. Kubrick was actually a human being. He seems to have been at one time: Spartacus and Paths of Glory, Dr. Strangelove, too, but as time went on, he must have retreated further and further into ... wherever, rather like Howard Hughes in his own way.
I love the movie, though, because he shot the candlelit scenes actually by candlelight with a crazy F 0.8 lens, if my memory's correct, like it really looked back then.
Eyes Wide Shut, also: By that time the poor guy was so emotionally shut down that who can say what it was about? Perhaps he was an early adopter of Prozac and had seriously taken too much.
It's too bad that Stan - would he have freaked out if I called him Stan? - is no longer with us. We could use him now. Trump, Gaza, Ukraine, Sudan, what material! I have some friends who are optimists. I think they listen to K-Pop & watch the latest Disney movies. I don't blame them, though. Look what reality did to Stan.
