Oddly, or maybe not so oddly, Trump and his MAGA lieutenants also worship the past, even if that past, just like Putin's, never existed in the first place. China remembers its recent past, the humiliations and wholesale murder from Japan, the looting of the country by the Europeans, who drugged everybody out just for good measure.

Ukraine represented the future: Education, intelligence, internationalism, freedom, happiness.
