I believe in the 19th century, England tried to prevent foreign, uh, "powers" from getting what were their industrial crown jewels then, their textile factory technology. We forget how important that bygone stuff was now. The American South, whose economy was built on exporting cotton to those UK factories, thought they had it made and would succeed in seceding. (Sorry, I couldn't help that one.) But England, which had already outlawed slavery, wanted nothing to do with them and just shifted cotton production to Egypt.

So right, the Biden Administration and now Trump's, too, are/were playing a dumbass game with this one. Just look at solar panels, smartphones, and EVs. The Chinese aren't dumbasses. They were perhaps the most advanced civilization on the planet till they totally screwed up in the 1600s and let decentralized power backed by science in Europe leapfrog them while they kept letting autocratic power stymie their own inherent intelligence.

And you know, after all the idiocy with Mao, they don't want to do it again.
